October 14, 2005

Greetings Colleagues,

Literacy Team Update

Purpose of Literacy Teams:

Literacy Teams were established in Chicago Public High Schools in the summer of 2002.

Literacy Team members serve as the leaders for literacy professional development and instruction in their high schools and are essential to the reading achievement of CPS students.

Literacy Teams assist the principal and lead literacy teacher to develop and implement the school’s comprehensive literacy plan. Literacy teams also provide professional development to core subject area and reading teachers. The Office of Literacy provides professional development and support to Literacy Teams.

LITERACY LINKS

Chicago Reading Initiative (CRI)

The Chicago Reading Initiative (CRI) will undertake many efforts to improve reading. One of the most important steps that it has taken to ensure that all students learn to read well has been the adoption of a common framework for instruction. This framework is significant because it imposes high-quality standards on the teaching of reading, while preserving the professional choices and flexibility teachers must have if they are to best meet students' learning needs. For more information, visit http://cri.cps.k12.il.us.

Links-to- Literacy

Links-to-Literacy is an independent reading initiative to encourage all students to read books they choose. It is open to all Chicago Public Schools, and is free of charge.

Mayor Daley's Elementary Book Club

Mayor Daley's Elementary Book Club provides resources for Chicago schools and communities to organize meaningful and sustained book clubs that, utilizing parent and community volunteers, facilitate book discussions with young people; teaching them the joys and adventures of reading.   http://www.mayordaleysbookclub.org.
