Purpose:
To develop students' use of personal strategies by teaching them to predict,
confirm / revise, and reinforce target word meanings.
Preparation
- Select the key concepts (target words) for the
assigned passage.
Before
- Share with students the purpose of this
activity.
- Model the strategy on the first word using a
think-aloud.
- When students understand the purpose and
expectations for this activity, have each student scan the passage to
locate the target words in context and complete the Prediction or Definition column with his or her
prediction of its meaning.
During
- Have students confirm or revise their
predictions as part of their purpose for reading the passage.
After
- Engage the entire class in a discussion about
the revisions they made as they read.
- Allow each student to explain his or her
reasoning based on its based on its context. If necessary, allow students to choose
the best meaning from dictionary entries.
- Have students complete the New Sentences
or Examples after Reading column to reinforce their learning.
