Procedure Guide: AFFIX
ANTONYMS
Purpose: To increase student awareness of the influence of
affixes on word meaning.
Preparation
On a transparency,
chalkboard, or chart paper, write three word pairs that become antonyms by
changing an affix; for example, inflate-deflate, useful-useless, underfed-
overfed.
Before
- Inform students of the purpose of this activity.
- Show students the antonym pair list, and
demonstrate how the affix change results in the words becoming antonyms.
During
- As the students read for assignments and
pleasure, have each student locate at least five additional pairs and
place each on a 3" x 5" card.
After
- Discuss with the entire class the words located
in the selection.
- Display the word pairs on a word all.
