Procedure Guide: CONTRACTION SCAN

Purpose: To reinforce students' recognition of contractions.

Preparation

Prepare a list of all common contractions.

Locate or create a text with many of the contractions in it.

Before

• Have students brainstorm the contractions they know; ask them to spell the contraction as they call it out.
• Correct any misspellings that students don't catch.
• Add contractions that students missed.

During

• Have students read the text and list the contractions they encounter.

After

• Have the students write the words that make up the contractions on their lists.
• In pairs, have the students compare their lists.
• Have the entire class discuss the contractions found.

Assessment

The accuracy of students' contraction lists.
