Procedure Guide: DRAW

Purpose: To provide strategies for reading and interpreting nonfiction texts.

Preparation

During

Draw: Have one member of each group draw from a list a comprehension questions about the text, and read the question aloud to the members of his/her group.

Read: Have all members of the group read the text to find the answer to the question.

Attend: Encourage all group members to attend/listen to and participate in the small-group discussion as they work together to locate in the text the answer to question.

Write: Allow time for the group members to write their answer to the question.

 

After

Option 1: Distribute to every student all questions in the list, and have students take

      notes as the groups share their answer and explain how they located the answer.

 

Option 2: Direct small groups to sequence themselves to address the questions and

answers in the text. Have student take notes as each group explains their answer.

                                                                                                                                                         

Option 3: When the DRAW strategy is completed, have all students take notes as

                  groups and answer their selected question. Allow time fro students to work

                  independently to write a summary of the text that was read for this assignment.
