Procedure Guide: GUIDED READING PROCEDURE
(GRP)
Purpose:
To improve comprehension and fluency and to organize the information read.
Before
- Explain the purpose of the activity.
- Doing a Think-Aloud, model setting a reading
time limit for a sample passage.
- Have student’s survey the passage to be read and
determine a class reading time limit.
- Set the purpose for reading: to comprehend the
main ideas and read within the determined time frame.
- Set a timer at the time limit previously
determined by the class.
During
- Have students read silently and monitor their
comprehension during reading by attending to the main ideas.
After
- Immediately after reading, have the students close
their books and write all main ideas they can remember.
- Have students share their main ideas.
- Have students determine a new reading time (the
time should be shorter).
During
- Have students reread the passage to add new
information and to correct inaccurate information.
After
- Guide students in a whole-class discussion about
the information they learned as a result of reading the passage.
