WRITING
Purpose: To help students generate and focus on a writing
topic from a reading passage; it also helps students increase their writing
fluency

Prepare a transparency at
a short text for modeling the procedure.

- Have students
freewrite on a topic of choice or as a response to a reading. Explain that
they must fill one page at the very least. (You may change the minimum
length.)
- Instruct students to read their
freewrite and circle the most powerful word, phrase, or sentence.
- Have students write the word,
phrase, or sentence as the title on a new piece of paper and freewrite
again.
- Students read their new freewrite
and again circle the most powerful word, phrase, or sentence to use as the
title of another freewrite.
- Follow this in-depth prewriting
activity with a writing activity that focuses on the organizational
structure of writing.
