Procedure Guide: MAPPING INTO WRITING
Purpose:
To provide students with assistance in organizing their thoughts before
writing.
Preparation
- Review the use of concept and semantic maps to help
students comprehend text before using this strategy.
Before
- Explain the purpose of the activity, including
how this is a way to plan for writing.
- Model the strategy by writing one piece
together.
During
- Have each student: develop his/her map.
- Categorize his/her information using at least
one of the methods listed below:
by
sequencing (first, second, third).
by time
order (before, during, after).
by main
ideas and details.
by any
other natural categories .that are developed.
- Write an introduction that states the main idea
or topic and leads the reader into the piece.
- Use the information from his/her map as
paragraphs for the body of his/her piece.
- Add a conclusion that summarizes the main and
wraps up the piece.
After
- Have students read their piece for any revisions
that need to be made and then trade their piece with another student for
their suggestions for revisions.
- Write a final draft.
