Procedure Guide: METAPHOR / SIMILE QUEST see organizer

Purpose: To increase students' awareness and interpretation of metaphors and similes.

Preparation

• Select a text (possibly a poem) that has multiple examples of metaphors and similes.
• Use metaphors and similes' from the text to complete the Metaphor/Simile blocks of the Metaphor/Simile Quest form.

· Prepare a transparency and handouts.

Before

• Explain the purpose of this strategy.
• Review metaphors and similes.
• Use a think-aloud to demonstrate completing the first complete entry.

Scan the text for the metaphor or simile.

Write the sentence that includes the metaphor or simile in the appropriate box. 0 Predict its meaning based on the context.

Confirm or revise the prediction after reading the entire text. Inform the students

that it is completely appropriate to discuss the meaning with others before confirming or revising

• In pairs, have students write the remaining metaphors and similes on the Quest form.
• After the Quest forms are completed, have students discuss their predictions and revisions with the entire class.

During

• Have students complete a blank Quest form (or have them use their Vocabulary

Notebook) for the metaphors and similes that they encounter in their assignments and pleasure reading.

After

• Have each student complete a sentence strip with his/her favorite metaphor or simile. Display students' sentence strips in the classroom.
