Procedure Guide: NOUN PROXY

Purpose: To increase students' ability to use appropriate pronouns.

Preparation

• Convert the nouns in a text that students are reading to pronouns.
• Make a transparency of the revised text.

Before

• Explain the purpose for the activity.
• Model changing the first few nouns that should be pronouns.
• As students scan the text have them change nouns to pronouns, as they deem appropriate.

During

• Have students read the text, evaluating their noun/pronoun changes as they read.

After

• In pairs, have students compare the pronouns and come to consensus for each.
• Through discussion, change the transparency text according to class consensus.

Assessment

Accuracy of nouns changed to pronouns.
