Procedure Guide: PRC (Predict, Read, Check)

Purpose: To help students focus on reading by making and checking predictions.

Before

• Explain the purpose of this strategy, emphasizing the following:

Good readers make predictions based on prior knowledge, titles, pictures, and subheadings they read.

Good readers change their predictions as they encounter new information while reading.

• Model by guiding students step-by-step through the PRC to complete a reading.
• Have students preview the reading selection and write a prediction from the preview before reading. Encourage students to:

Work and write with you as you model the PRC strategy.

Write in complete sentences.

Give reasons (support/evidence) for their predictions.

During

• Have students read silently, stopping at the end of each section. Encourage students to:

Read along silently with you as you model the PRC strategy.

Monitor their predictions as they read.

Write a summary of what they have read at the end of the section.

• Have students use their recall/summary to write a confirmation or rejection of their

predictions. Encourage students to:

Work and write with you as you model the PRC strategy;

Provide evidence from the text to support their check of their predictions.

After

• Have students recall the entire passage by using their predictions and checks.
• Discuss with students how their predictions changed as they read.
