Procedure Guide: PARTS-OF-SPEECH GRID see organizer

Purpose: To help students discover the way suffixes change words to form different parts of speech.

Preparation

• Design a four-column grid with columns entitled noun, verb, adjective, adverb.

· Fill in one word {part of speech} on each line, preferably words from a current text.

Example:

Noun	Verb	Adjective	Adverb
beauty	beautify	beautiful	beautifully
	satisfy
		rich
explanation

Before or After

• Explain the purpose of the activity.
• Model the strategy with the completed first row.
• Have students fill in the remaining cells in the grid.
• In pairs, have students compare their answers.
• As an entire class, fill in the grid, discussing how the choices of words were made.
