Procedure Guide:
PERIODICAL SEARCH
Purpose:
To help students recognize and use appropriately a variety of words with similar
meanings.
Preparation
- Using magazines and newspapers available in the
school library, record all the words found that denote “saying” on
a transparency, chalkboard, or chart paper; for example, decried,
misspoke, ranted, avowed.
- Have the periodicals available to show the
students.
- Determine a word for the students to research,
possibly seeing would be a good place to start.
Before
- Explain the purpose for the activity.
- Demonstrate the activity, showing' students the
list of words and the magazines and newspapers from which the words came.
Ensure that all students know what is expected of them.
During
- Have students read periodicals to locate words
that fall under the focus word category, “seeing”, or another word
selected.
After
- After student pairs have compared the found
words, have them compile a T-Chart of positive and negative words. ??????
