Procedure Guide: PRONOUN TO NOUN

Purpose: To
increase students' ability to use appropriate pronouns.
Preparation
- Select any text that has a number of pronouns.
- Make copies of the text to distribute to
students.
- Prepare a transparency of a different text to
use for modeling.
Before
- Explain the purpose of this activity.
- Using the prepared transparency, model the
strategy by reading the text aloud, marking out each pronoun, and writing
its referent above it.
During
- Have students read the text, marking out each
pronoun and writing its referent above the pronoun.
- After
- In pairs, have students read aloud to each
other, reading the nouns in place of their pronouns. Tell students to
discuss any responses that differ from those of their partner.
- As a whole class, discuss the choices that were
made.
