Procedure Guide: SCAN & RUN

Purpose: To provide a strategy for surveying and reading nonfiction texts.

Preparation

• Prepare transparencies to use for modeling the strategy.

Before

• Explain the purpose of the strategy.
• Model the SCAN & RUN strategy using a think-aloud.
• Have students use a text, possibly a textbook, to SCAN.

Survey headings and turn them into questions (to be answered during reading).

Capture the captions and visuals (trying to understand their meaning).

Attack boldface words (begin each section by reviewing the keywords)

Note and read chapter questions (helping to focus the. reader).

During

• Have students use RUN as they read the text and answer the SCAN questions.

Read and adjust speed.

Use word identification skills (sounding out, context clues, structural analysis).

Notice and check parts you don't understand.

After

• Write the answers found to before-reading questions.
