Procedure Guide: SIGNAL WORD CHART CHOICE
Purpose:
To familiarize students with the connection between signal words and patterns
in text structures by relating them to the appropriate graphic organizer.
Preparation
- Gather graphic organizers for selected passages.
- Make a transparency and student copies of the
graphic organizers.
- Locate texts containing signal words for the
various text patterns.
Before
- Explain the purpose for the activity.
- Using signal words only, model the choice of
graphic organizer for each category of text structure.
During
- Have students read the passages and select the
appropriate graphic organizer for each passage based on the signal words.
After
- In pairs, have students compare their choices
and revise if necessary.
- Over time, have students continue. to choose the most appreciate graphic organizer for the
texts they encounter.
- Encourage students to use the graphic organizers
and signal words in their writing.
