Procedure Guide: SIGNAL WORD CLOZE
Purpose:
To assist students in recognizing the relationship between signal words and
their surrounding text.
Preparation
- Identify or create a passage that contains a
number of signal words from various categories
For example; cause-effect, sequence,
comparison-contrast
.
- On a transparency, cover the signal words with
correction tape, or white out the signal words and then make a
transparency.

- Prepare copies with the signal words missing for
the students.
Before
- Explain the purpose of this activity.

- Model the procedure for the students using a
Think-Aloud to explain your thoughts as you select an appropriate signal
word for the first blank. Repeat the procedure until all students understand
the procedure.
During
- Have students read the selection independently
and fill in the blanks with appropriate signal words. Allow students to
use a categorized list of signal words from which to choose.
After
- In pairs, have students compare their choices
and decide whether their choices are acceptable.
