Harlan is N.A.S.A.'s only
N.A.S.A. Explorer high school in Illinois!
Harlan Community Academy High School has the unique
distinction of being the only NASA Explorer High School in the state
of Illinois as of this past spring of 2005. Harlans' "T.E.A.M.
Falcons (Together with Efforts Achievements are Made)" consists
of Cynthia Talbert-Redd (Science & Special Education), Saundra R
Brown (Technology & Music), Marcus Ware (Mathematics), Calvin Whitelow
(Science), Dr. Gertrude J Hill (Principal & Science), Edward Schweitzer
(Science - Academic Center), and Dennis Laurincik (Mathematics - Academic
Center). Harlan joins Clara Barton Elementary School on the 2005 team,
Joyce Kilmer Elementary School on the 2003 team, and the 2004 team from
Dolton School District 148 Harriet Tubman Elementary School.
On October 20th, an inservice was held for Harlan's Faculty, LSC, PTA
and NCLB parents by Marge Lehky, and Catherine Graves, from the NASA
John H Glenn Research Center, Cleveland Ohio.
Schools from across the country are eligible to apply online for this
opportunity to partner with NASA in a program designed to bring engaging
mathematics, science, and technology learning to educators, students,
and families.
Each spring, a three-year partnership is established between NASA and 50 new NASA Explorer School teams, consisting of teachers and education administrators from diverse communities across the country. NASA invites the selected teams to work with education specialists from NASA Centers in an effort to spark innovative science and mathematics instruction for students in grades 4 through 9. While partnered with NASA, NASA Explorer School teams will acquire new teaching resources and technology tools using NASA's unique content, experts and other resources -- to provide exciting learning experiences science, mathematics and technology for students.The deadline for submission of the on-line application for NASA Explorer Schools is January 31 of each year.
