Are you a college student who would like to earn some extra money? Do
you know a college student interested in earning extra money? Do you
attend college out of the Chicago area? Would you like to earn some
money while you are at home on break?
College students are needed at Harlan Community Academy High School
to assist in the AVID tutorial sessions held on Tuesdays and Thursdays
during periods 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9. College students are able to choose
whichever periods accommodate
their schedules. Training is provided by Chicago Public Schools. Chicago
Public Schools requirements include completing an application, a TB
test, and a background check and submission of school transcripts. The
stipend is $10.00 per hour.
Interested candidates may obtain an application from the Main Office.
Contact AVID coordinator Vivian Hapaniewski at 773.535.5400 for more

AVID program looking for a few good college assistants HCAHS Faculty
Member and AVID Coordinator by Vivian Hapaniewski
Approximately 40 AVID students participated in the college tour of Northern
Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. Upon their arrival at the university,
students listened to several presentations given by
university officials. Topics included an introduction to
the types of programs offered at NIU, financial aid
and the CHANCE program. The CHANCE program
provides academic assistance to students
who may not meet NIU's admission requirements.
After lunch, students were taken on a tour of the
university’s campus. Another group of
AVID students toured Chicago State University.
After listening to presentations by the university officials, students
were able to tour the campus. Chicago State University has an Upward
Bound program for high school students. Students
participate in classes on Saturdays during the school year. During the
summer, students participate in a six-week program. Students live on
campus for four of those weeks. They attend classes, go on field trips,
visit colleges, as well as other activities. There is no charge to participate
in the program. Anyone interested in applying for the Upward Bound program
at Chicago State University may pick up an application in the Main Office
or contact AVID coordinator. Vivian Hapaniewski at 773.535.5400.

Harlan Renaissance 3
Harlan Renaissance Staff Member
by Valerie Isaac
Journalism students from around the country took part in what is known
as the National Scolastic Press Association’s National Convention,
a four day event filled with a number of exciting sessions all created
for perspective young writers, photographers and designers. Over 4000
students from across the United States were accounted for at Chicago’s
Hyatt Regency, and among those were Harlan Community Academy High School’s
very own journalism
students. Along with journalism teacher Brian Zehr, 14 HCAHS students
were awarded scholarships from the Journalism Educator’s Association
to attend the convention based upon essays they submitted
weeks before. This opportunity allowed the budding journalists to not
only meet other journalism students, but participate in a variety of
conference including: creating compelling feature stories and newspaper
design; the positive and negative uses of white space; and developing
headlines. Also, students were encouraged to study newspaper or yearbook
topics during the four-day convention. When asked to describe her experience
at the conference, journalism
student Lisa Brown, said, “I thought it was very
interesting. I learned stuff I didn’t know before. I had
fun and it was a great experience overall.”
La shunda Williams, another HCAHS journalism student, shared her favorite
part of the conference: “I liked when I got all the free stuff.
I took like 30 pictures, and I liked the class we had with
Oprah’s representatives. Surely, the journalism convention had
proven to be a truly fun and rewarding adventure for some, yet how has
it benefited Harlan’s journalism class as a whole?
Journalism teacher, Brian Zehr answered that question by saying, “I
now have students who see journalism much larger than a first period
class; some even see it as a viable career path.” This convention
will be a story written upon the minds of thousands of journalism students
for years to come.
After returning from the convention, students have been working feverishly
on the 2006 yearbook, the five-week parent newsletters and an impending
student newspaper.

The Day of the Dead is a
Mexican celebration celebrated
on November 1 and 2 on behalf
of the relatives and friends who
have passed away.
November 1 is the day for
people who have passed away
before they were 18. November
2 is for the people who have died
at the age of 18 or older.
People celebrate the Day
of the Dead in many different
ways. Some people celebrate
with fiestas, gatherings and all
sorts of fun things. People set
up altars in order to pay their
respect to the persons that have
passed away. You can put a lot
of things at the altar. Most
people put things that the person
liked, such as candy, flowers,
toys and food. You can
decorate the altar as you please
because it expresses how you
feel about your loved ones.
In Spanish II with Senora
Gonzalez, that is exactly what we
did.
We set up an altar and let
everyone put a picture of their
deceased loved ones and
something they loved. We took
pride in learning something new
and exciting. Although these
people have passed away their
memories still live on.
This holiday has many
symbols to represent how special
it is. It has a special flower
called cempazuchil (marigold).
People give offerings while celebrating
this holiday.
Another kind of food is
“Pan de Muerto” (Bread of the
Dead). They also make all sort
of things to put as decorations,
one is papel picado (paper flowers).
We have learned so much
about this holiday. You should
never pass by an opportunity to
learn someone else’s culture,
because it could always benefit
you. I will try my best now, to celebrate
this holiday myself on my
own even when I’m out of high
school.
